The midfielder who gives the team time and space
A midfielder can make a difference before touching the ball, moving to open a passing angle for a teammate.
A midfielder's job goes beyond distributing passes. They find positions that support the player on the ball and watch opponents' movements before receiving it. Sometimes a single step sideways gives a teammate a way out of pressure and opens a route into attack.
When possession is lost, the role changes quickly. The midfielder may block a route through the centre or close down the player who has won the ball. Watching their movement off the ball reveals an influence that pass totals alone cannot capture.
